Statista says that Chinese telecom giant Huawei was the leading filer of international patents in 2014, against the backdrop of a record breaking year for patent filings globally. Last year patent filings reached a total of 214,500. Huawei applied for 3,442 patents, outpunched US chipmaker Qualcomm and Chinese competitor ZTE with 2,409 and 2,179 applications, respectively.
While the two Chinese tech companies topped the ranking, the United States is for now the primary region for patent applications, ahead of Japan (42,459) and China (25,539). Among the Top 10 filing countries, China was the only country to see double-digit growth in 2014, said Statista.
