Who said it: Terrance Rohan, Index Ventures Seed Fund Manager
In Context: Referring to startups like Etsy, Kickstarter, Patreon, GoodEggs and Science Exchange, Terrance Rohan, a Silicon Valley native with a British university degree and experience working at Google and YouTube, describes an emerging category of company that he’s investing in. (Four out of the five examples are in the Index portfolio). These startups exhibit a trend where business is driven more by mission and passion and creating product than by the sheer wish to exploit a new technology or introduce an innovation. Those factors are even more important than profit, at least for the founders. His view is that these “Platforms of Purpose” will prove successful in attracting both talent and customers.
