April 9, 2015

It is interesting to note that solar energy has matured, shifting from venture capital and PE, into Infrastructure when tracking the amount of capital raised and recorded by Preqin. The solar power industry and the renewable energy sector as a whole has become a “prominent” infrastructure asset class, says Preqin. It has tracked over 755 solar power deals globally since 2005, worth about USD 42bn. A variety of investors are involved ranging from infrastructure fund managers and direct institutional investors to industry players such as developers, contractors and other industry-specific trade investors. The number of solar power-related deals has increased dramatically since 2005 and 2006 when just five solar power deals worth about USD 2 bn occurred. In comparison, in 2014, 148 transactions were completed, representing an estimated aggregate deal value of USD 19.4bn.
