Technology Hubs and Unicorn Farms

April 2, 2015

The cities of Berlin, London, Stockholm, and Amsterdam are constantly competing with each other to be the “startup hub” of Europe and a reasonable case can be made for any one of them. For example, this week the FT has a feature about Stockholm as the new unicorn “factory”, a place of birth for several billion dollar startups in Europe, while startuphook compares London and Berlin, predicting that the economics of living and doing business in Berlin will make it the leading hub in five years’ time. A recent survey published on Statista ranks the hubs from two more perspectives, PE and technology corporates. The two are in alignment on London and Berlin and Amsterdam, but PE is less convinced of the potential in Munich than are tech corporates, while PE is much more bullish on Stockholm than tech corporates.
