Which cities have aggregated more than USD 100bn in private equity fund capital in the past decade? Which cities have the highest number of PE firms? Preqin has the answers. Number one is New York, both in terms of number of firms (685) and capital raised (USD 823bn). Out of the top ten, six North American cities have relatively high numbers of PE firms.
Outside of the US London is the leading private equity hub in both the UK and Europe, having attracted USD 408bn in investor capital over the last decade. It is number two overall. Paris is the only other European entry in the top 10. China has two cities in the ranking in terms of number of firms, with Beijing (125) and Shanghai (110) topping the Asian pile. But it fares less well when comparing volume of PE.
Combined Shanghai and Beijing are home to just 95 USD billion in capital, which is less than the PE segment in Menlo Park, California has amassed. No African or Latin American cities placed in the top 10. The highest Latin American entry is Sao Paulo with 55 firms, which has raised USD 10.3bn in the last 10 years; Johannesburg was Africa’s highest placing city, with 25 private equity houses accumulating a total of USD 2.3bn.
