January 4, 2012

In its latest press release Bloomberg New Energy Finance said it has recorded the trillionth dollar of investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart energy technologies since its records started in 2004. the news comes in advance of the definitive numbers for 2011.  BNEF says that annual clean energy investment has risen nearly five-fold, from USD 52bn in 2004 to USD 243bn last year, a compound annual growth rate of 29%.

The investment activity is driven by fundings for US solar thermal projects, some large European offshore wind financings, continued high levels of activity in China and Germany, and the flowering of national renewable energy programmes in India.

It is also worth noting that Solar sector M&A dominated transactions in the category of green or clean tech, according to the latest report from Peachtree Capital Advsors. Image source: Sunedison/MEMC
